I took this photo on Memorial hill one morning. Like most of the beaches in the Bay of Islands it was within a 20 minute drive. It has good surf and and from the top of Memorial hill, one of the best views of the ocean and surrounding islands.
I won a calender competition with this photo too which was a bonus. |

Matauri Bay has a bit of history to go with it too. The Rainbow Warrior (a Greenpeace ship) was blown up by protesters and sank out in the bay. A few people died in the process, so they built a memorial on top of the hill with the propeller of the ship. Very sad, but being up there you couldn't think of a more fitting tribute.
